How to Get Listed in Wikipedia

As most know, Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia that covers a wide variety of topics and in the process lists a staggering number of businesses and individuals. To be mentioned on Wikipedia is more than just an ego stroke. It can also be a resume enhancer or website traffic booster. And whether it is a simple link to your site or an article on your company, getting listed is making the to-do lists of many.
So how do you get into the pages of Wikipedia?

Getting you or your company listed is probably both easier and harder than you think. Since its contributors are the word at large, just about anyone can add a link or page. However, once added, it then needs to survive community debates, the arbitration process and content administrators. And any whiff of commercialism and it is unlikely to last longer than it takes you to reboot your computer (assuming you’re running Windows). There is an interesting interview conducted by Dr. Ralph Wilson of Web Marketing Today regarding the subject. The interviewee is Mike Svatek of baynote.com who explains his struggles and resulting insight as, after multiple failed attempts, he finally managed to get his company listed. Svatek advises: (1) don’t use persuasive writing, (2) demonstrate that your business is ‘notable’ by showing that what you do is important broadly, and (3) get involved in the internal Wikipedia debate of the inclusion of your business in the encyclopedia.
