Underground Art or Disposable Design?

Sometimes good art can be found in the strangest places… even, underground. A coffin and casket company based in Nottingham, England, is making a name for themselves in Europe with the latest in “disposal design”: the custom coffin. What has been so pleasing is that they have been recognized in art form. We are going to museums that deal with art (and putting on exhibitions),” said David Crampton, director of Vic Fearn Co. Ltd manufacturers of the coffins. “We’re not just coffins anymore but pieces of art.” Whether the new designer coffin craze will catch on in the states is hard to say but in Europe, the demand appears to be on the rise.

“It’s a very small part of our business but… it’s simply grown and grown and grown.” The greatest interest has been in the last few years,” said Crampton in a BBC interview. As a designer, this is one of those stories that catches your eye. As a creative developer, it makes you stop to consider if such a concept would have legs here in the U.S. As a father of two young children, you’re once again brought back to reality where the desire to make a buck is balanced against the inevitable reminder of one day being separated from your children. Although ultimately not a business venture I could pursue, maybe I wouldn’t mind a little humor at my funeral: how about a coffin in the shape of an envelop, postmarked heaven? (just a little wishful thinking)
